Eliza Au: Artist-in-Residence Hymn to Calamity January 13– March 11 , 2007 The annual Halvorsen Residency at Contemporary Crafts Museum & Gallery has honored an outstanding student or emerging ceramist for nearly forty years. The residency entails a six-month commitment working at Contemporary Crafts’ on-site studio and culminates in a solo exhibition at the Museum. The Halvorsen Artist-in-Residence donates a piece of the artwork produced during the residency to the Museum's Permanent Collection. The 2006 Halvorsen Residency was awarded to Eliza Au. Prior to the residency, Au studied at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD), Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. She also completed an internship at Kohler’s renowned Factory Arts/Industry Program. Au has exhibited her work across the United States and Canada. She recently received a grant from the Vancouver Foundation, and has forthcoming exhibitions in Canada at Richmond Art Gallery, Campbell River Art Gallery and Crafthouse Gallery. Hymn to Calamity is a statement of hope amidst the chaos of natural disasters, and a metaphor for sanctuary in times of personal struggle. Combining a c-shaped cylinder of hollow ceramic multiples with the soft spiral design on the surface of each piece conjures a strength that alludes to the eye of a storm. Au worked with Edward Doolittle, professor of Math and Statistics at the University of Regina, to generate the computer drawing that defined the curved line she used in her molds. When the multiples are stacked in place they create an arc, the height of which towers over and engulfs a viewer who has stepped inside the environment. Au uses multiples in her installations, creating a total environment and experience, rather than a presenting a series of objects on pedestals to the viewer. Contemporary Crafts is proud to have supported Au’s research and process with this Halvorsen Residency, enabling her to create this new body of work. RELATED PROGRAMMING
