“My time with clay is ultimately my time: my time to make something I want without the pressures of client or program, and with function as a springboard towards exploration.”
A practicing architect, David Piper uses his ceramics practice as an after-hours release from the pressures of his 9 to 5 career. Though decidedly a side project, his ceramic work has been shown throughout the country, from the Craft Biennial at Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2005 to the Strictly Functional Pottery National in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Vitrified Clay National in Rockport, Texas and the Starbrick Clay National, Ohio. Primarily working in porcelain, he focuses on form, experimenting with the dichotomy of function vs. dysfunction. His work is also included in the book 500 Cups: Ceramic Explorations of Utility and Grace by Tom and Elaine Coleman.
